Robin Hanson, CMA’s Associate Conservator of Textiles, discusses proper care and storage of textiles, both the textile art objects that TAA members may themselves create, and those heirloom textiles that we all have in our collections at home. Topics covered are proper vacuuming techniques, rolling and storage of two-dimensional textiles, and boxing of three-dimensional textiles. Limited space available. Fee: $30; Members $25. Lorraine Glessner is an Assistant Professor at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. Her work involves the complex interrelation of materials collaged in encaustic (wax). Glessner’s works are visually uplifting, fanciful, rich in color and textiles, and details that challenge the imagination.

This workshop introduces the participant to the basics of encaustic painting as well as a variety of advanced techniques. Covers use of equipment, safety issues, tools, and techniques to create texture, surface manipulation, and collage.

The journey continues to other weaving centers of Egypt to present day Nagada Clothing and Accessories where Michel Pastore and Sylvia Nasrallah design a very unique line of clothing.

Ohio Knitting Mills, founded in Cleveland in 1928, became one of the largest knitwear manufacturers in the USA. During its peak production years of 1947 to 1974, it produced knitwear for such labels as Pendleton and Van Heusen and maintained a 'library' of fashion. Join TAA and learn the story of American sportwear, see the specialty knitting machines, and browse the archives. Shopping will be available in advance of the scheduled public sale. Alia Kate became a fair trade Moroccan textile importer after working and traveling extensively in the region where she had the opportunity to meet and learn from women artisans. Her presentation on the lives of the Amazigh, the art of weaving in Morocco, and the challenges of artisans cooperatives in entering foreign markets is rich with personal anecdotes and set against the backdrop of Morocco's political and economic history.

Robin Hanson, CMA’s Associate Conservator of Textiles, leads a workshop for artists and collectors that focuses on the materials that artisans use in their creations. This workshop is designed for the benefit of both artist and collector; providing detailed information on displaying created, collected, and favorite family heirloom textiles in an archival-appropriate manner. Various display options used at the museum and adapted for TAA will be discussed.

Robin's presentation includes samples of members' work which have been mounted. Take home material including a description of mounting techniques and sample materials provided. Participants are invited to bring to the workshop one textile object about which they may have a question regarding mounting/display.

Installation artist, Nami Yamamoto, leads participants in learning the skills needed to help facilitate the design and creation of a simple repeat pattern. The resulting designs will be used to create a wall piece or sculpture, constructed organically within the 2-day time frame, which will remain in the CH/UH Library as a gallery exhibition. All skill levels welcome. $240, TAA members $180 ($150 by April 19)

As a child in Iraq, our hostess learned to stitch from the nuns at school and was always surrounded by relatives who knitted, sewed and embroidered. Visit her home with its lovely garden, and see hand woven and embroidered rugs from Iraq including an antique prayer rug, a mud cloth batik by an African artist, wall hangings from Thailand and Myanmar, traditional loomed fabric clothing from Malaysia and an interesting patchwork bedspread from Luxor, Egypt. Enjoy luncheon and beverages. $40, TAA members $30; reservation required. Donation receipt provided.
