Ethnic and Rural Textiles

Private Home in Moreland Hills
As a child in Iraq, our hostess learned to stitch from the nuns at school and was always surrounded by relatives who knitted, sewed and embroidered. Visit her home with its lovely garden, and see hand woven and embroidered rugs from Iraq including an antique prayer rug, a mud cloth batik by an African artist, wall hangings from Thailand and Myanmar, traditional loomed fabric clothing from Malaysia and an interesting patchwork bedspread from Luxor, Egypt. Enjoy luncheon and beverages. $40, TAA members $30; reservation required. Donation receipt provided.

Our Concord hosts embrace artists for their individuality, ethnic heritage, and diverse thinking. Their extensive collection includes paintings, textiles, calligraphy, decoys, wooden trophy fish, and animal sculptures as well as rare and dramatic Finnish woolen bed rugs (ryijys) from the early 1700s, Brayshaw fish carvings from the 1930s, and antique Amish quilts. Integrating Personal Objects into Artwork

Bring objects of personal importance to incorporate into an art piece/wall hanging using fabric, needle, and thread. These objects may include, for example, pieces of fabric, buttons, or photocopies of letters or pictures on paper. Each participant will compose his or her own personal design.

Conservation Hangers for Wearable Art and Heirlooms

CMA Conservation Lab
Robin Hanson, CMA's Associate Conservator of Textiles, hosts a workshop where participants will construct several types of padded and support hangers to use in the storage and display of textiles. This workshop is designed for the benefit of both artist and collector; providing detailed information on the proper conservation methods of displaying and storing created, collected, and favorite family heirloom textiles in an archival-appropriate manner. Various display and storage options used at the museum and adapted for TAA will be discussed.
Fees: Members $25 (non-members $35); $25 supply fee. Both fees are payable at time of registration.

With a background in business and textile design, Rose Corrick set out to explore the “business of art,” creating a venue called “Art of Cloth” to showcase her textile art talents in a commercial business setting. Her Chagrin Falls–based business produces collections of hand-dyed women’s clothing for the wholesale apparel markets. Her clothing line includes easy-wear jersey separates that feature her distinctive surface designs. Come to her studio for a lecture, tour, and demonstrations.

Pre-Hispanic and Modern Textiles of Latin America

For nine years Paloma Pilar Grasso has been the owner of Galeria Quetzal, a Hispanic folk and fine art gallery, which, among other things, carries textiles from all over the Hispanic-Latin world. She has traveled to most of these countries, made friends, and studied the techniques with which the objects were made. Her presentation will include the textiles of five countries— Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Haiti, and Peru—with personal anecdotes on meeting some of the artists.

Millinery designer and speaker Cynthia Marek Lundeen, a past first-prize winner of the Kentucky Derby Hat Contest, presents a lecture with visuals garnered from historic source materials as well as live modeling of her haute couture millinery creations. Equally appealing to the hat lover as well as the serious student of millinery, this lecture will provide excellent preparation for its companion workshop.

With the adage “What is learned with pleasure, is learned full measure” as a guiding principle, Cynthia Marek Lundeen instructs participants in the time honored techniques of hat construction, including hand-blocking shapes on wooden hat blocks. While being guided in the process, participants will use their own design aesthetic and may choose among a variety of millinery materials to create truly unique, artistic hats. All skill levels welcome.

Workshop
Combining Textiles with Metal

CMA Classroom A
Interior designer, educator, and fiber artist Mary Platis Kapenekas will lead participants in a two-day workshop to explore the use of metals in combination with textiles.
Session 1: Learn about various types and weights of metals, materials, paints, stitchery, folding, and embellishing techniques.
Session 2: Design and construct an art piece that combines the prepared materials from the first session, producing a textile/metal wall piece or sculpture to take home. All skill levels welcome.
Fee: $240 (members $180/$150 by May 2)
