Our Shaker Heights hostess is a former art gallery owner, and her lovely home is filled with exquisite art, including many of her own works. African (especially South African) textiles and sculptures adorn every room. Her own studio and gallery on the lower level of the house are an intriguing mix of inspiration and fine technique in several art media. Come to the garden for refreshments—hats welcome!

This is an introduction to encaustics (wax) on paper. Participants will learn several methods of making monoprints with colored waxes. This is truly an experience of instant gratification, as the wax bonds immediately with the paper. Participants will take turns using specialized heating boxes and plates to make prints using specialty papers. Come explore the possibilities! Specialty papers and use of waxes provided for a $5 materials fee. Bring your own lunch. $30; TAA members $25

View more than fifty pieces of her work including her unique pincushions. You’ll be inspired by the simple yet unexpected juxtapositions of everyday items that make up her compositions. The tactile pieces with their subtle color variations are a treat for the eye. We'll visit her amazing studio jammed-packed with elements to be transformed into art. Learn machine needle felting techniques, digital design methods, and explore stitch manipulation and vessel assembly. Dorothy Caldwell’s talk will demonstrate how her textile art is an ongoing exploration of a sense of place. Her longtime interest in the marks that humans make on the landscape is translated onto cloth through dyeing, printing and stitching. Currently she collects earth pigments, plant matter and objects in diverse landscapes around the world and incorporates them into her work. By using materials collected in the field, whether far away or close to home, the pieced, layered and stitched surfaces tangibly absorb and reflect her artistic journey.

Dorothy’s workshop will examine “the stitch” using the traditions of Indian Kantha embroidery. Kantha embroidered quilts use the running stitch to form patterns and narrative imagery reflecting the lives and experiences of the makers. Slides and actual examples will be used to bring this rich artform to life. With Kantha embroidery as a basis and through a series of exercises, expressive aspects of “the stitch” will be explored, helping participants build a personal vocabulary of mark making. Class limit: 20 participants.

Eugenia Vainberg began to embroider at age 8 in her native Ukraine, and has continued her artistic journey everywhere she has lived. Her delicate and expressive "portraits in thread" draw inspiration from theater, ballet, music, and literature. Her motto is "no day without stitching" and for her, colors and their variations are melodies on cloth. Learn about the reference collection, especially resources on quilts, tapestries, rugs, and needlework.
