 E-News is the monthly e-mail bulletin sent out the first of each month from TAA, that includes member news, classes, lectures and information on textile-related events.  Submission deadline is the 25th of the month prior to event.  Example:  News for the March 2009 addition of e-News needs to be received by February 25th, 2009.  Information for e-News should be sent to sandyshel@roadrunner.com

Exhibit features forty monumental kimono created by Master Kubota. Kimono will tour the United States for six months with only two U.S. stops: San Diego, California and Canton, Ohio.

Art and textile historian Dale Carolyn Gluckman is guest curator for the exhibit Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota presented by the Canton Museum of Art, she is also co-author and editor of its catalogue.  Ms. Gluckman will explore the life and work of kimono artist Itchiku Kubota (1917-2003) who spent over twenty years developing a unique means of creating pictorial imagery on the kimono using labor-intensive dying method.The development of the kimono from an undergarment to an art will be explained along with how Kubota combined tradition and modernity in his personal life and artistic creations.

Volunteers Needed

 

We are looking for volunteers to help teach/supervise activities we have scheduled for the Family Day at the Canton Museum on Saturday, April 18, from 1-4:00.We need a few volunteers to help with each of the following:

Simple bookmaking project

Simple Shibori dyeing project

Simple Origami or Fan project

Inspired by Japan: Resist Dye Techniques Traditional and Modern - Feb. 10 - March 1

Kent State Stark presents Inspired by Japan: Resist Dye Techniques Traditional and Modern, hosted in conjunction with the Kimono As Art:  The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota at the Canton Museum of Art. The exhibit is co-curated by TAA Member Rebecca Cross and Jean Druesedow. The display is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in the lower level of Main Hall and is open Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - noon.

The exhibition features work by artist Rebecca Cross and students from the Kent State University School of Art, including some kimono and other Japanese artifacts from the Kent State University Museum.

Rebecca will also conduct a workshop called Basic Shibori Resist at Kent Stark Campus on Saturdays, February 14 through March 7. If interested, please contact the kent.edu School of Art website.

Member Exhibition:   Textile Art Inspiration: 2009

This member exhibition is part of a multi-year Textile Benefit project using modern and historical textiles from the CMA Education Art Collection.  These textiles, used whole or fragmented, are either incorporated into works of textile art or provide the spark of inspiration for an entirely new piece.

Participants should have received a contract from Greta at HeightsArts.  Call Greta or Peggy at (216) 371-3457 if you have not received anything.  Drop off your work anytime from 10-4:00 on Saturday, February 21 at the HeightsArts Studio at the Library, 2340 Lee Road, Cleveland Heights.  All work submitted must have appropriate hanging mechanism and be ready to hang or display, i.e., framed work must have wires or sawtooth hangers, quilts must have rods, lattice stripping, etc.  Mannequins for garments are welcome.  Questions?  Call Marty at (216) 932-2966

Textile Art Inspiration: 2009 Artist’s Reception

Meet the talented artists who were inspired by textiles in the Education Art Collection Textile Benefit to create these unique pieces.  All items in the Textile Art Inspiration: 2009 exhibit are part of the fund-raiser for CMA textile acquisition fund and the CMA Education Department.

CONSERVATION LAB TOURS POSTPONED 1 WEEK

 

Our behind-the-scenes tours of CMA's new textile conservation lab and textile storage area must be rescheduled for Wed.
