Associate Conservator of Textiles Robin Hanson directs CMA’s textile conservation program, overseeing the treatment and care of the museum’s encyclopedic collection of 4,500 textiles. Discover the range of work involved in running CMA’s newly redesigned textile lab and storage area.

Exhibit features forty monumental kimono created by Master Kubota. Kimono will tour the United States for six months with only two U.S. stops: San Diego, California and Canton, Ohio.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help teach/supervise activities we have scheduled for the Family Day at the Canton Museum on Saturday, April 18, from 1-4:00.We need a few volunteers to help with each of the following:

Simple bookmaking project

Simple Shibori dyeing project

Simple Origami or Fan project

After 35 years, Moroccan-born Georgette Benisty closed her successful high-end dress business on Boston’s fashionable Newbury Street to follow her heart.  Through a process she considers deeply spiritual, the artist designs uniquely stylishdoll figures, dressing them with a refined, sophisticated fabric collage, interweaving the color, rhythm, architecture and antiquities of her native land through fabric, paint and collage. 

Lecture free to TAA members and full-time students; others, $5 at the door.

WORKSHOP- An Exploration in the Art of Dollmaking

with Georgette Benisty

Thursday and Friday, April 2-3, 10 – 4

CMA Classrooms
Learn techniques adapted from high fashion sewing to create a doll full of personality. Create a head from paper clay or resin, collage a dress from an eclectic array of beautiful fabrics, and embellish by texturizing, painting and embroidering.  Basic hand-sewing skills required.  Basic sewing supplies needed.

Cost: $240; TAA members $180 (or $150 if before March 3).  Materials fee $10.

Member Exhibition:   Textile Art Inspiration: 2009

This member exhibition is part of a multi-year Textile Benefit project using modern and historical textiles from the CMA Education Art Collection.  These textiles, used whole or fragmented, are either incorporated into works of textile art or provide the spark of inspiration for an entirely new piece.

CONSERVATION LAB TOURS POSTPONED 1 WEEK

Our behind-the-scenes tours of CMA's new textile conservation lab and textile storage area must be rescheduled for Wed.
