Combining Textiles with Metal
Mary Platis Kapenekas
Thursday & Friday, June 2-3, 2011

CMA Classroom A

Interior Designer, Educator and Fiber Artist, Mary Platis Kapenekas, will lead participants in a two-day workshop to explore the use of metals in combination with textiles. The first session will be an introduction to various types and weights of metals, materials, paints, stitchery, folding and embellishing techniques.   Participants will experiment with the ornamentation and preparation of the metal for integration with fiber. The second day will be devoted to the design and construction of an art piece which combines the prepared metals from the first session to produce a textile/metal wall or 3-dimensional art form. Volunteers Needed for Focus: Fiber 2011-12

All the Focus Fiber entries are now in the hands of our juror, Dorothy Caldwell.  No matter which pieces she chooses to include in the exhibit, it promises to be a spectacular show at the Canton Museum of Art.

Now we need to begin planning the activities around Focus: Fiber 2011-2012.  Our first meeting to discuss schedules and ideas will be at Marty Young’s house, 3098 Berkshire Rd., Cleveland Heights on Monday, June 6, at 5:00.  If you are interested but unable to attend this meeting, please send your ideas and suggestions to Marty Young ; email  byoung4480@sbcglobal.net .  Volunteer opportunities are available for those who wish to help in the planning phase and those who wish a short commitment on day of the event.  We will have more meetings as the event nears.

Our Shaker Heights hostess, Elise Newman, is a former art gallery owner, and her lovely home is filled with exquisite art, including many of her own works. African (especially South African) textiles and sculptures adorn every room.  Her own studio and gallery on the lower level of the house are an intriguing mix of inspiration and fine technique in several art media.  A South African woven wall hanging, an artist-crafted California redwood burl table, a Fred Schmidt wall sculpture, and an ancient Asian silk painting all await your appreciation.  Come to the garden for refreshments—hats welcome!  $40 (TAA members $30)  Reservations: Charla Coatoamccoatoam@yahoo.com

Introduction to Encaustic Monoprinting

This is an introduction to encaustics (wax) on paper.  Participants will learn several methods of making monoprints with colored waxes. This is truly an experience of instant gratification, as the wax bonds immediately with the paper.  Participants will take turns using specialized heating boxes and plates to make prints using specialty papers.  Come explore the possibilities!  Specialty papers and use of waxes provided for a $5 materials fee. View more than fifty pieces of her work including her unique pincushions. You’ll be inspired by the simple yet unexpected juxtapositions of everyday items that make up her compositions. The tactile pieces with their subtle color variations are a treat for the eye. We'll visit her amazing studio jammed-packed with elements to be transformed into art. Quantum Felting: Vessels
