Shibori Workshop at Cleveland Museum of Art

(lunch on your own). Shibori is a Japanese tie-dye method for creating complex patterns, textures and color on cloth. A variety of effects are possible by folding, binding, clamping, stitchingand pole dyeing the fabric.

Students will use fiber reactive dyes on cotton, explore color effects with
overdyeing and complete a cotton scarf. Applications include quilts, wearables or
home accessories. Instructor: fiber artist JoAnn Giordano.$95, CMA members $80.

3rd Annual Octavofest:  Book and Paper Arts Events

These events included multiple exhibitions, lectures, artist demonstrations, workshops and classes, art tours, and lectures that filled the entire month of October and brought the exciting world of book and paper arts to a wide audience of all ages.

Octavofest (which takes its name from a traditional bookmaking format) kicks off on October 1st with the 4th Annual 4Ever Morgan Open House and Silent Auction and Octavofest 2011 Opening, an event sponsored by the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation, at 1754 E. 47th Street, Cleveland, OH 44103. Untangling Threads: Women Artisans in Morocco’s Rug Weaving Industry

Opening on September 24th and running through October 31st at Oberlin's FAVA Gallery is Untangling Threads: Women Artisans in Morocco’s Rug Weaving Industry. This exhibit displays handwoven Moroccan rugs beside documentary photographs of the weavers and their families, thereby creating a link between the traditional textural and modern visual arts.

The Dream Weavers: The Art of the Loom exhibit at The Shaker Historical Society seeks to show the  historical with the modern, by displaying the beautiful wares of nine prominent local textile artists—Leslie Alperin, Jodie Kantor, Miriam Lidsky, Elinor Polster, Rose Rubin, Nancy Tovar, Horst of Horst Couture, and Robbie Grodin and Donna Christley of Alpaca Fiber Studio—in contrast with the functional and practical clothing and textiles of the North Union Shakers.

Open Studio Event

Saturday, October 22, 2011    10:00-4:00   Make-a-Difference Day!

Home of Sandy Shelenberger.  Take a scenic drive out to the country and visit the studio of Sandy Shelenberger.  Local artisans work and sales. Items include:  Ukrainian eggs, gourds, mixed media, beach glass jewelry, chocolates, hand-dyed scarves, fiber art, fabric and more!!   Demonstrations, light refreshments, and benefit items/raffle for Ashtabula County Humane Society. The Humane Society will have foster animals for a “meet & greet.” While you are out this way, take in a covered bridge or a local winery!

Join nationally recognized textile artist and quilter, Sandy Shelenberger, as she shares her experiences, from inspiration to finished artwork. Sandy uses surface design techniques such as painting, screenprinting and airbrushing to express her evolving inner journey. Her goal is to inspire others through her knowledge and passion for the creative process.  Open to the public, $5 at the door (Textile Art Alliance Members and full-time students free)

The some things looming (www.somethingslooming.com) Fiber Arts Gallery and Studio, 526 Washington Street, Reading,PA has issued a “Call for Artists” to submit works for its upcoming salon-style exhibition, “Refuse/reseen,” that will run from April 14 through June 2, 2012. The show is part of the larger FiberPhiladelphia 2012 biennial celebration from March through May involving many artists, gallery exhibitions, major art institutions and numerous independent venues
