Focus: Fiber 2011-12

The Textile Art Alliance of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Canton Museum of Art present Focus: Fiber 2011-12, an eight-state juried show of contemporary fiber art.  Juror for the exhibit is internationally known fiber artist, Dorothy Caldwell.

Congratulations on Focus: Fiber Success

The Focus: Fiber 2011-12 Exhibit and Opening reception have been a huge success!!  Congratulations to the exhibit committee chaired by Marty Young.

Betty Jo Scurei organized the food for the fabulous Opening Reception.  She would like to thank the TAA members, Members of the Canton Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America, along with members of the Canton Spinners and Weavers Guild for their contributions to the hospitality table.

Eugenia Vainberg began to embroider at age 8 in her native Ukraine, and has continued her artistic journey everywhere she has lived.  Her delicate and expressive "portraits in thread" draw inspiration from theater, ballet, music, and literature.  Her motto is "no day without stitching" and for her, colors and their variations are melodies on cloth.  She will present examples of her work and share some ideas for promoting and teaching the art of embroidery.  Visit her website: http://evainberg.com  TAA members free; non-members $5.

Ingalls Library Visit

 CMA members are fortunate to have access to the extensive resources of the Ingalls Library.  Come to a special TAA presentation in this the first of three CMA department visits this year.  Learn about the reference collection, especially resources on quilts, tapestries, rugs, and needlework.  Browse the many journals in the reading area, learn about online art databases, and bring any research questions to the meeting.  Space limited; reserve by January 27.  $35 (TAA members $25)

All-Day Workshop: Painting on Silk Saturday, February 11, 10:00–4:00 (lunch on your own). Learn skills to paint on silk using gutta, a linear resist. After demonstration and discussion of design ideas, you’re ready for a brief practice period followed by painting your own silk scarf. Instructor: fiber artist Susan Skove. $75, CMA members $60. Plus $20 materials fee to instructor for materials and silk fabric. Supply list at the box office.

All-Day Workshop: Creating Collage Saturday, March 3, 10:00–4:00 (lunch on your own). Learn about the many techniques of collage. Explore ways to alter and transfer images and select pieces for your collage composition. Instructor: collage artist and author Gretchen Bierbaum. $75, CMA members $60. Materials fee to instructor $10. Supply list at the box office.

Ikebana Workshop Saturday, April 14 or Tuesday, April 17, 10:00–4:00 (lunch is on your own). Learn this traditional Japanese art of flower arranging that draws emphasis toward shape, line and form. Instructor: Isa Ranganathan. $85, CMA members $70. Supply list at box office. Students share the cost of flowers.

All-Day Shibori Workshop Saturday, April 21, 10:00–4:30 (lunch on your own). Shibori is a Japanese tie-dye method for creating complex patterns, textures and color on cloth. A variety of effects are possible by folding, binding, clamping, stitching and pole dyeing the fabric. Students will use fiber reactive dyes on cotton, explore color effects with overdyeing and complete a cotton scarf. Applications include quilts, wearables or home accessories. Instructor: fiber artist JoAnn Giordano.$95, CMA members $80. Fee includes dye, auxiliary chemicals and Fabric. Supply list at box office.

February 1, 2012…..Small Expressions 2012, HGA’s Annual Exhibit of Small Scale Works.  Exhibit: May 10 - August 12, 2012, to be held at the Long Beach Museum of Art in Long Beach, California Small Expressions is an annual, international, juried exhibit featuring high quality, contemporary small-scale works. Small Expressions is sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., to showcase small scale works created using fiber techniques in any media, not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction including mounting, framing or display devices. February 25, 2012…. The some things looming (www.somethingslooming.com) Fiber Arts Gallery and Studio, 526 Washington Street, Reading,PA has issued a “Call for Artists” to submit works for its upcoming salon-style exhibition, “Refuse/reseen,” that will run from April 14 through June 2, 2012. The show is part of the larger FiberPhiladelphia 2012 biennial celebration from March through May involving many artists, gallery exhibitions, major art institutions and numerous independent venues

**New TAA Event for Spring 2012:  Save the Date!

TAA Workshops, Maggi Jackson of “MaggiKnits” Saturday & Sunday, March 24 and 25 from 10-4 at River Colors in Lakewood, OH.

The Saturday workshop will be "Oh No! Not Another Scarf" and Sunday, "Wearable Art". Talk and Knitted Mini-Fashion Show, Friday, March 23. Details TBA.
